Parakeets are comprised
of numerous small slender long-tailed
parrots. There are many different varieties making up the species of
parakeets. Budgies are commonly referred to as
parakeets however; the term parakeet actually describes a small
parrot bird. Budgie is derived from Budgerigar which is the
proper classification term. American and English Budgies are perhaps the most commonly known. The American Budgie is smaller in size and usually more active while the English Budgie is considerably larger sporting more characteristics. The English Budgie is said to be the more attractive as the features of a larger head, chest, circular throat spots and vibrant more clear colors and markings make it a more stunning looking bird than that of the American Budgie. The average lifespan of a budgie is generally 2-7 years. Budgies have been known to live 13+ with proper care and originating from good stock. Sexing is usually easy in the mature budgie as the color of the budgies cere on males are blue, and the female cere is white, light beige, pinkish, or brown. While it is fairly accurate, the color of the cere cannot always be used to sex a budgie. Some color varieties like the albino and lutino and some recessive pieds like harlequins differ as both males and females have beige or pink colored ceres. Other visual sexing methods include females having an almost invisible whitish ring around the nostrils and males having more rounded bulbous cere. Both of which are often hard to recognize to an untrained eye. Some say that females bite harder than males and males have rounder heads while females heads are more flat on top. A brown colored cere usually indicates the hen is in breeding season. The American Budgie as mentioned is more active, you should provide plenty of safe toys for them to entertain themselves with. They are quite comical to watch. Click here for wing clipping instructions.
